Welcome to the Karam Foundation.
Origins of Karam Foundation
The Foundation was set up in 2007 by Karamat Iqbal. While visiting his Mum in his birthplace in Mohra Diyaran; a small village in Dadyal, District Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, on the first morning, he was woken about 4am by the ‘call to prayer’ from the local mosque.
During the next half hour or so, he began to think whether it would be possible to set up an organisation to enable young people in the community to succeed. Maybe then, there would be less of a desire to go abroad, mainly England.
By the end of his stay a week later he had spoken to three or four people who were to become the local Committee. The name had to mean something in Urdu and was easy to pronounce in English. So, karam was agreed, which means kindness, generosity, grace.
Purpose
To help regenerate the local community in Pakistan through education, skill and enterprise development
To help poor families meet the cost of travel, school uniform and text books, the ‘hidden extras’ which can often be barrier to access of ‘free’ education
To provide particular support and encouragement for education of girls from poor families.
